Matilda De Meurechy

Associate

Matilda is a Junior Associate at CAST. She joined the Bar in 2025 after specializing in IP, art, and cultural heritage law. Matilda brings a distinct international and interdisciplinary profile to her work, approaching legal issues with both technical rigor and cross-border perspective.


Matilda combines strong legal analysis with sensitivity to the cultural, commercial, and human dimensions of the art sector, and an ability - enhanced by legal design and contract design training - to communicate complex issues with clarity and precision.

Work Highlights

  • Assisting in the representation of private collectors against a foreign State in restitution disputes.


  • Assisting in the representation of both artists and galleries on issues relating to their contractual relationship.


  • Advising both art foundations and private collectors on matters regarding the circulation of (potentially) protected cultural heritage - especially regarding the ‘Masterpieces’ policy of the Flemish Government - as well as on corporate law, inheritance law, and tax law aspects of owning or transferring artworks.


  • Advising private collectors on issues regarding the authenticity of an artwork.


  • Representing private collectors in a dispute concerning the non-conform delivery of an artwork by a gallery.


  • Advising museums and cultural institutions on loan-related issues.


  • Advising artists in moral rights-related disputes.
